We want to share with you the fun and exciting things that have happened here at the Buffalo Bill Cultural Center!

Kansas Day 2015Our Annual Events

Kansas Day:
Kansas Day – January 29th, was a huge success this year! With close to 800 students, we explored corn on the plains, past and present. The kids learned about corn products, watched popcorn pop and Western Plains Energy offered a great Ethanol presentation. The kids loved Captain Cornelius.

Wild Water Day:
Wild Water Day 2015
Our second annual Wild Water Day on July 8th was a blast! Families came and enjoyed our giant water slide, ran through sprinklers, and waded in the kiddie pools. We had free watermelon and John Anderson made delicious vanilla ice cream with his antique engine. The second Wednesday of July brings about music, food, excitement, and well . . . lots of water!  Mark your calendar for next year.

Oakley Corn Festival:
The Oakley Corn Festival begins this year Friday, October 9th and the fun continues on Saturday the 10th. Friday Cornhusking in the fieldincludes the Oakley Corn Cook-off downtown leading into a reception for the huskers at the Buffalo Bill Cultural Center. On Saturday, the festival continues with the Kansas State Cornhusking Contest, rural life demonstrations and displays, and old time tractors and engines on exhibition. All day long we offer training for novice corn huskers and are pleased to have Screwloose BBQ as our concessions this year and John Anderson is back with his engine-driven ice cream.  Don’t miss the pumpkin decorating contest, corn ear throwing contest, corn money pile, and quilt drawing!

Smoky Hills Public Television was on hand at last year’s festival and produced Traveling Kansas Oakley which aired several times this year and can be viewed on their website anytime at www.smokyhillstv.org.  Our show earned SHPTV a 1st Place award from the Kansas Association of Broadcasters.

A big thank you goes to all our sponsors and donors that make our annual events successful and enjoyable!

Upcoming Exciting News

Our theme for the upcoming Kansas Day, January 29, 2016, is “Welcome to the Wild West”.  We will take a trip back in time to the 1860’s when Kansas became a state.  We will be sharing about Kansas forts and posts and the resourcefulness of settlers. Also, a chuck wagon will be here with a presentation and a pioneer snack!  Area students, grades K-8 will be invited to participate in our program and presentations.  This year, we will also offer a special program time for community residents. Check our website for updates and times.

We opened our fabulous free Corn Maze on September 16 and it will be available till the end of October from dawn until dusk. Come out and explore the twists and turns! Thank you DuPont Pioneer, American Implement, and Rod Bates for helping make our maze a success.

We have completed our commemorative brick patio, which displays businesses and locals who contributed to our fundraiser.  We are truly thankful for all the support!
